The opening of the Four Seasons Resort in Papagayo in 2004 put Costa Rica in the world map as a luxury travel destination. This event launched a country-wide trend of building or remodeling resorts and hotels that cater to the high end client. This luxury fever quickly spread from the Guancaste shores to the Central Pacific region, to San Jose and inland to Arenal.
The result is a wide range of options to plan a luxury Costa Rica honeymoon, combining hotels and regions without giving up pampering, excellence in service and outstanding accommodations. Every year, Costa Rica is proud to feature an important number of properties in the top rankings of reputable travel publications such as Travel & Leisure, Conde Nast, Spa Magazine and others.
In the last five years, Costa Rica has seen important luxury hotel brands establish an significant presence in the country. Following the steps of the Four Seasons, the Spanish chain Melia rebranded its Conchal hotel to the upscale all inclusive resort Paradisus brand, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. The Marriott chain opened a beautiful five star JW Marriott in Hacienda Pinilla just south of Tamarindo.
Luxury chains partnered with independent hotel owners to upgrade facilities and improve service. Tabacon Grand Spa became a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, to compete with newcomer The Springs resort in Arenal. The prestigious chain of Small Luxury Hotels of the World added four properties to include Reserva Conchal, Hotel Punta Islita, Rancho Pacifico and Gaia in Manuel Antonio. Other independent luxury properties have opened in Manuel Antonio, including Arenas del Mar and Los Altos Resort.
San Jose has no shortage of high end hotels. The Costa Rica Marriott competes head to head with the Real Intercontinental for the upscale clientele. Grano de Oro, a renowned bed & breakfast is a perennial name in top hotel lists. Just outside San Jose, guests can find Finca Rosa Blanca and Xandari in the luxury category.
