The village of Tortuguero lies on the northeastern Caribbean coast, approximately 50 miles north of Limon. It is accessible by plane or car with a transfer by boat to your hotel. Most people come to the region to visit Tortuguero National Park, experience the canals and explore the jungle. This is one of the principal nesting grounds for the green sea turtle. From June through October, thousands of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The park and canals are also home to a vast array of other fascinating wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, parrots, manatees, land turtles, numerous species of freshwater fish, caimans, and alligators.
The primary form of transportation in the area is a system of waterways and lagoons crisscrossing the park. Numerous boat tours are offered on the canals. You will see impressive flora and fauna from the water. Be prepared -- this is the wettest region in the country!

Suggested Activities While in Tortuguero:
- Catch a glimpse of the sea turtles as they lay eggs during nesting season. From July to October, witness one of nature's most intriguing events as Giant Green Turtles come out from the sea to dig a hole on the beach and lay dozens of eggs. Late in the season, you may witness the hatching of the eggs as baby turtles struggle to return to the sea to start their lives.
- Take a nature boat tour along the canals. Your naturalist guide will point out different types of birds, reptiles and mammals as your group cruises the Tortuguero canals and hikes in the Caribbean rainforest.
- Kayak on the canals in search of exceptional wildlife and to learn about this northeast Caribbean ecosystem.
- Glide through the rainforest on a challenging canopy tour. Enjoy a trademark Costa Rican nature adventure while learning about this unique ecosystem.
- The murky waters of Barra del Colorado, in a remote are of the Caribbean near the Nicaraguan border, appeals to the fly fishing aficionado. Spiny lobsters, enormous fighting fish, tarpon, and snook lurk in these waters. Another less touristy option is the nearby Parismina.
- Visit the town of Tortuguero, an isolated beach town that once thrived on the sale of turtle products and is now the pride of the conservation movement. Learn about Costa Rica's Caribbean culture and the town's turtle saving efforts.
